One of the many challenging ethical dilemmas a person my face is the clash between corporate culture and personal ethics. When supervisors and managers make demands of their employees and pressure them to act unethically, employees have to choose between ethical conduct and caving in to the expectations of their bosses. In this hypothetical scenario, Cadence, an employee who “always tried to do the right thing” faces a new supervisor who demands unethical behavior from her. While reading the scenario, put yourself in both the supervisor and Cadence’s shoes and consider how you would act in the situation.

Building on the concepts you have learned thus far, as well as the information you have read in this hypothetical scenario, answer the following questions:

  1. Describe the organizational structure of ABCO Corporation.
  2. Which type of leadership power is Britney using? Is it effective in this situation? Why or why not?
  3. Does Cadence have any other alternatives than the two that she is considering? Predict what will happen if she sticks to the two options she has considered already.

  5. How could Britney have approached the situation with Cadence differently to avoid the predicament Cadence is in? Is Britney’s leadership style effective in this situation? Justify your answer.
  6. Would government support for whistle-blowers in the form of monetary rewards be effective to help whistle-blowers step up? Why or why not? Justify your answer.

Read: Case #6 –National Collegiate Athletic Association Ethics and Compliance Program(pages 444-4454)

In the Chapter 8, we discuss the idea that ethics programs are a way for companies and organizations to improve their level of ethical decision making and conduct. Not only do large, multinational corporations benefit from these programs, but also schools, non-profit organizations, and other small businesses. In this assignment, we will explore two very different organizations and the ethics programs they have developed to increase ethical business conduct and compliance.

Walmart is a global corporation which started out as a small business. Walmart’s mission is to help people live better lives and them save money. However, the company has received much criticism because of the ethical issues it has with concern to numerous stakeholders. Walmart is trying to address these concerns and has made efforts to become a more socially responsible company.

College football has become much more than a popular sport. It has become a lucrative money-maker for many colleges and has made a significant impact on the culture of numerous schools. Because of its gaining popularity and the widespread influence it has, college football has opened up an area for business misconduct to occur. National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) was developed as an objective body to establish ethical rules and standards for college football. While each university administration is ultimately responsible for the behavior of its employees, NCAA promotes leadership and excellence so that the pressure to increase a good reputation and the level of revenue do not lead to ethical misconduct.

Using the concepts presented in Chapter 9 as well as information you have read in the Walmart and NCAA cases, please answer the following questions:

  1. Do you think Walmart is doing enough to become more sustainable? Justify your answer.
  2. What are the ethical issues Walmart has faced? Briefly describe at least four examples.
  3. How is Walmart attempting to answer concerns regarding misconduct?
  4. How does NCAA encourage collegiate football programs to develop a culture of ethics and compliance?
  5. Is it a valid criticism that NCAA is based more on compliance than ethical values?
  6. How can student athletes, coaches, and university administrators demonstrate a proactive response to ethics and compliance?
  7. Evaluate both Walmart’s and NCAA’s efforts to achieve ethical responsibility within their organizations. Has Walmart’s ethics and compliance program decreased the amount of employee misconduct? How have NCAA’s efforts impacted college football to decrease the number of scandals? Have either company been successful? Justify your answer.
  8. Do poorly written codes of conduct explain the level of misconduct in an organization? Why or why not?

Contrasting leadership styles within a company sometimes causes conflicts, especially when the issue requires ethical behavior. Ethical leaders are very beneficial for organizations and encourage ethical behavior from lower-level employees. Conversely, personnel under an unethical management are less likely to communicate their concerns about ethical issues they face within a company. In the hypothetical situation you will read for this assignment, Stan wants two other employees to act unethically for the good of the company and encourages them to do what he wants by offering them large bonuses. While reading, pay attention to the motives behind his actions, as well as the leadership styles of the various employees.

Building on the concepts you have learned thus far, as well as the information you have read in this hypothetical scenario, answer the following questions:

  1. Compare and contrast the leadership characteristics of Stan and David.
  2. Discuss whether David has any alternatives than implementing Stan’s order.
  3. Even if the automation is successful at increasing productivity, what might be some other consequences of Stan’s decision that could negatively impact the firm?
  4. How is David to reconcile the difference between Stan saying the decision has been made to move toward automation, Jane’s accounting analysis that demonstrates no improvement in efficiency by moving to automation, and the community’s need to keep their people employed?
  5. Given David’s past behavior and management style, is Stan likely to persuade David to support the move towards automation? Is there a way that David and/or Jane could convince Stan to try this move toward automation at another plant? What would motivate Stan to change his support to automate David’s plant and instead have Jane find a plant that supports moving toward automation to increase efficiency?
  6. Predict what might happen if David and Jane follow through with Stan’s request. Then predict what might happen if they do not.
  7. Should the CFO be the key leader to deal with ethical risks? Why or why not? Justify your answer.
