By using all three screeners together I can ensure the children I work with are meeting their developmental milestones. This is because these screeners address language, cognition, and social-emotional aspects. The language screener (Fluharty Preschool Speech and Language Screening-2) will help to measure the child’s articulation, sentence repetition, how they follow directions, how they answer questions, how they describe actions, and how they sequence events (Howard & Aiken, 2015). The cognition screener (Brigance Infant and Toddler Screen) will help to measure the child’s language, motor, self-help, social-emotional, and cognitive functions. The social-emotional (Brief Infant Toddler Social Emotional Assessment) will help to measure the child’s social skills, communication, behaviors, and environment. The subtests within each of these screeners will help us to know if the child is meeting their developmental milestones. This is an important part of assessment because if they are not we need to know why as well as what steps of action need to come next.

Explain what your next steps would be after administering the three screeners to a child whose development you were concerned about.

If there are any development concerns after screeners, the next step is to bring the concern and share the information with the child’s parents. The child can then be referred to the local school district to receive assessments. Often other professionals are needed, such as a psychologist. Next, a plan needs to be made to fit the needs of the child, such as an IEP for example.

Discuss the importance of involving families in the screening process. Make sure to include specific examples that are connected to the three screeners you chose.

Involving families in the screening process is very important. Families know they are involved and that they have support in helping their child at home and academically. That builds trust. Parents also know and see a lot in their child that others may not; therefore, they can provide a lot of useful information such as what does the child like, what do they play with, how do they speak, etc. Parents also need to give their consent for assessments to be made.
