“Leadership is an important and difficult task, but the cornerstone of organizational success” (Manning & Curtis, 2012, p. 11).

  • Early in the 20th century, scholarly interest in the modern concept of leadership was heavily influenced by the Great Man (or Great Person) theory of leadership. According to Pierce and Newstrom (2011), “Scholars interested in leadership have approached the development of an understanding of leadership from a variety of perspectives, starting with the ‘Great Person Theory of Leadership,’ which posited that great leaders, such as Julius Caesar, Joan of Arc, Catherine II, Napoleon, Mao Tsetung, Winston Churchill, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt were born with a set of personal qualities that destined them to be great leaders” (p.7).Since that time, many more theories or models of leadership have influenced both its study and practice, with strong emphasis on leadership traits and behaviors. The multiple theories suggest there are many ways to lead, and the resulting leadership influence can be far-reaching even centuries after leaders are gone (Manning & Curtis, 2012).
