In what ways do you think the manager’s job will be different in 20 years than it is today? How can you prepare for that future?

The first question is going to require some “outside the box” thinking. Many people try to “B.S.” this question by simply saying…..”I have no idea what the future will bring”… While I agree nobody can predict the future with 100% accuracy, that does not mean you are unable to make an INFORMED, EDUCATED, RESEARCHED ‘guess’. So, if I were you….

1. Do some quick Google searches to see what business “experts” think will be some of the biggest changes over the next 20 years.

2. Try to figure out how 1 or 2 of those changes will impact the job of the MANAGER (Plan, Organize, Staff, Lead, Control)

3. Then tell us how you specifically will prepare yourself to still have a viable career in management 20 years from now.

I believe that the core of management work in 20 years will stay the same, but adaption and evolution will be necessary. Managers will need to adapt to new technology, and algorithms for hiring, ordering, delivery of goods, all aspects of planning, etc.. There are multiple articles arguing the point of a more diverse workplace and community due to automated and algorithmic hiring processes, that will eliminate bias decisions, i.e. race, gender, religion.

The ordering process and delivery of goods will continue to evolve exponentially as they have been over that past couple years. Take Amazon for example, they have projects in the beta stages already for drone delivery of your packages, as well as fully automated and machine-ran warehouses for sorting, packing and shipping.

The planning of all aspects of business in 20 years will have changed tremendously. All levels of managers, from strategic planning and executive level management, to lower level, operational managers, must incorporate the technology and attempt to make an educated, knowledgeable guess about what is to come in the future.
