From the limited information I have on Shelby’ case, I would first reach out to her middle school team to see if it may just be her having a difficulty with the transition to high school or if these behaviors were this severe in middle school. I would also reach out to the family to make sure nothing has changed at home. If these behaviors are consistent with what they middle school team reports and if there have been no changes at home, I would think that the evaluation team would consider a different school placement where Shelby can be in a small class with additional supports.
For Bea, I believe that the team should not recommend a change of placement. The student is a tier 3 student only in reading and is on grade level for math. I feel it is current schools’ job to adjust instruction to meet the needs of this student. This includes using a different reading intervention program and collecting data to see where Bea is having her reading difficulty.
For Shelby’s case only having limited background, I would lean towards the team considering a different placement. With that being said, she is probably in a new school and might being ahving difficulity adjusting to high school given that she is a 9th grader. If this is the start of the school year, she probably just started high school and is new to the team. If possible the team should reach out to the middle school team to confrim that they have seen these concerns before. As always, the team should be reacing out to the family if possible. What changes have occured at home, or over the summer?
Bea-The team should NOT recommend a change of placement. The student is a tier 3 student only in reading. It is up to the current school to adjust instruction to meet the needs of this student. That includes using different reading intervention programs and approaches. Data needs to be analyzed to see where is the break down in her reading.
