Structure, Change, and StressDB 5

Primary Task: 850 words (with minimum of 2 references); Secondary Task: 150–200 words
Details:

CMA is currently set up as a divisional structure, including research and development (R&D), production, marketing, and finance. Although the company has used different structures in the past, there is a concern that the separation of the departments is creating silos that prevent a free flow of communication.

You are on the phone with Jared. This call is dedicated to organizational structure.

“I’m willing to reconsider the current structure,” he says. “But I worry that a change of this magnitude will create a lot of stress throughout the organization.”

“You’re right,” you say. “Change is never easy. But with the help of human resources and the support of the vice presidents, organizational change could help the overall performance of the company.”

“I need to talk to the VPs about this,” he says.

“Of course,” you say. “Their input is important for buy-in.”

“You’ve done a good job of explaining things in papers and training materials,” he says. “I’d like you to give me something that describes different types of organizational structures. I think it would be helpful for me and the VPs. Can you do that before next week?”

“Yes,” you say. “Would 850 words be sufficient?”

“It would,” he says. “Also, give me your opinion about which structure would be the most effective for CMA. I’m sure you have an opinion.”

“I do,” you say smiling. “You’ll have my paper on your desk before the meeting.”

“Thanks,” he says.
