the correctional function

This paper is due by Saturday (02/04) 11:59 p.m.

Directions:

This writing assignment requires you to watch the movie Shawshank Redemption (1994) and provide a detailed analysis of several correctional concepts as they are illustrated in this film. Relying primarily on chapters 10 & 11 of your text, discuss some or all of the following concepts: adaptive roles; prison violence; prison subculture; deprivation and importation; the inmate code; prisonization; the prison economy. For example, you could discuss the way in which the film illustrates the process of prisonization, the way in which some longtime inmates became highly prisonized, and how Andy tries to avoid prisonization. You do not have to address all of the concepts listed above, but be sure to clearly define the nature and function of those you choose to discuss.

I expect you to follow the guidelines outlined below and to structure your paper as one would structure any essay (i.e., introduction, clearly formulated thesis statement, organized body comprised of multiple paragraphs addressing distinct points, concluding paragraph). In other words, DO NOT MERELY LIST the concepts and provide examples. You will receive ‘0’ points if you do so. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me. Good luck and enjoy the film!!

Caution: The film is rated “R” and contains violence and profanity. If this makes you uncomfortable and you would prefer not to view this film, please contact me and we can arrange for an alternate writing assignment.

Plot Summary: Shawshank Redemption is based on a short story by Steven King (Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption). Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is a young and successful banker whose life changes drastically when he is convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife and her lover. Set in the 1940’s, the film shows how Andy, with the help of his friend Red (Morgan Freeman), the prison entrepreneur, turns out to be a most unconventional prisoner (Summary by M. Lewison).
