Executive Summary
This document will detail a strategy to migrate all essential business information technology resources from being locally hosted at ABZ Enterprise San Diego Datacenter to viable cloud-based hosting solutions.
This enterprise cloud migration will result in faster access to resources and minimize downtime due to network connectivity issues and other factors. Bottlenecks often occur over the VPN (Virtual Private Network) causing extreme processing slowness, especially at the customer service stations. A cloud-based solution will eliminate the need for VPN connections and will provide high-speed access only limited by the internet bandwidth available at each local site. A cloud-based solution will guarantee 99% of availability 99% of the time.
A productivity report across all sites has shown that the single largest cause of downtimes is network connectivity problems. Downtime results in low productivity which results in loss of revenue. Client Satisfaction will deteriorate and employee frustration along with overall morale decreases. The cost of implementing a cloud-based solution will be well worth the effort.
Background
ABZ Electronics is a multinational electronics manufacturer based in San Diego, California but with locations in South America (Brazil & Argentina), Europe (Germany, Azerbaijan & Greece), Asia (Hong Kong, Jordan, Japan, and Malaysia) and in South Africa.
Shared resources include the Inventory database which is accessed through an in-house application. Each site updates inventory in real time so that the database is always up to date. A few different applications that is also linked to the Inventory database and is also updated in real time. Any interruption to the network or the VPN will cause interoperability as these core applications will cease to work. Other core local based applications that will also be moved to the cloud will include Email and VoIP phone system.
Network issues are very frequent across all locations with sometimes all locations being down at the same time. Most of these issues stem from VPN connectivity issues which give all the locations access to the Datacenter network which hosts all the essential business applications and resources. Concurrent VPN activity from all locations to a single network also causes bandwidth issues and bottlenecks resulting is slow processing times. Individual sites have invested in higher bandwidth at their local sites, but this does little to enhance network productivity over the VPN. Outages at the San Diego data center including Internet outages or congestion, electricity issues, or network configuration issues. These issues tend to affect all the ABZ locations around the globe.
Cloud hosting will remove the reliance on the VPN and San Diego datacenter requiring only access to the internet. With a cloud hosting solution, speed and availability will be greatly enhanced without reducing any functionalities or comprising any security. Migration to the cloud will require little or no training to staff and operators as there will be minimal changes to the way that they currently access their respective systems. With successful cloud migration, overtime ABZ will save operational network costs over time and have the opportunity to eventually get rid of the Datacenter in its totality.
