While FMLA does provide leave for a variety of reasons for a set, limited period, it does not cover all reasons an employee may feel the need to take an excused absence from work for personal or family reasons.
Please respond to all of the following prompts:
- What is the public policy and purpose behind FMLA?
- Do you believe the duration of family leave is sufficient? Should it be extended? If so, why? What would be an appropriate period of time?
- Discuss whether FMLA is fair to employers, or poses an undue hardship.
- Should FMLA be extended to cover care for non-family members (i.e. friends, neighbors, boyfriends, girlfriends, etc.)?
