Your analysis should demonstrate your understanding of rhetorical principles covered in our course. Your critiques should be two to three pages in length, typed, double-spaced.

Prompts:

  1. What occasion was the speech meant for? Include the date and location for the speech and the audience it addressed. Note: there may be more than one audience.
  1. How did the speaker seem to be using Cicero’s Five Canons of Rhetoric? Please understand that your speaker most likely didn’t consciously apply Cicero’s Five Canons of Rhetoric. You are using the Five Canons to evaluate the speech. You will be looking for aspects of what Cicero thought were important for an effective speech in the text of the speech that you analyze (e.g. “Target Analysis,” one aspect of Invention). Provide direct quotations and/or examples from the speech to support your analysis.
  1. How did the speaker seem to be using Aristotle’s three methods of persuasion? Again, the speaker doesn’t consciously use Aristotle’s theory but you may see strong examples of ethos, logos, and pathos in the speech. Cite examples from the speech to support your analysis.
  1. Which of Hollingworth’s types of audiences does this speech seem to be addressing? Provided evidence from the speech and the occasion that supports your answer.
