Objective: To closely examine and compare media coverage of a current event across news outlets while incorporating concepts from the class. This assignment is meant to be an in-depth analysis of news coverage and how it varies across types of media outlets (non-traditional v. traditional as well as cable v. broadcast or even across cable stations) and across regions of the world.
Step 1: Choose a media story related to communication technology to follow throughout the remainder of the semester. The story should be one that is well covered by both U.S. and international media over a long period of time. (i.e. the AT&T/Time Warner merger, net neutrality, the role of social media in 2016 election ). The New York Times “Times Topics” is a great place to start looking for and following a specific current event http://topics.nytimes.com/topics/reference/timestopics/index.html?src=hp1-0-T. Step 2: Follow this story closely in at least 3 traditional news outlets (New York Times, CNN, Fox News, NBC, The Washington Post, etc) throughout the remainder of the semester. One of the news outlets should be an international source (Al-Jazeera, BBC, etc – the source does not have to be written in English). You are also required to follow the story in one “non-traditional” media outlet like twitter or a blog.
Step 3: Apply course concepts like citizen journalist, agenda setting, ethics, news values, media objectivity/bias, etc. to your analysis. You must include at least 3 course concepts in your project. We will be covering these concepts throughout the semester.
Step 4: Combine steps 1-3 and write a paper detailing the current event you chose to follow and analyze media coverage of the issue across outlets. Your paper should be no less than 7 pages and no longer than 10 pages,use APA style.
