The research paper will be in the form of a literature review of a current research area related to requirements engineering.
Expected number of papers to include in literature review: a minimum of 3 papers must be included in the literature review. You might also reference additional papers to help explain the background.
Strategy:
- Pick a full research paper
- Summarize that paper with the goal of understanding its main thesis.
- Identify a research question by generalizing from the paper’s thesis.
- Find other papers that address that research question (usually the Related Works section helps; pick research papers that are based on evidence rather than opinion).
- Summarize each paper, focusing in particular on how they answered/addressed that question.
- Perform an analysis of the papers by identifying the important themes that emerge from the papers.
- Organize the main body of the literature review using a thematic approach.
- Based on all that you have learned from studying the papers, write your conclusion about that research question and discuss the areas still open for future work.
- Include an introduction section that introduces the reader to the research question and motivation for studying it.
- Include a background section that introduces and overviews essential background information that a reader would need to understand your paper.
- Preface your paper with an abstract that summarizes your topic and findings.
In summary, your research paper should explain:
- what your research question is,
- why it is important/relevant,
- what is its background,
- what solutions have various researchers contributed,
- how good those contributions were (describe their empirical evaluation),
- what conclusions that you can draw from those contributions (i.e., how did they add to the body of knowledge),
- what open issues will require more work.
