Nicholas Moore:

For this week’s forum I chose to read and analyze “MISFIRES in the Gun Control Debate” by Meghan Rosen. This article is primarily written in favor of stricter gun control laws and measures in the United States, and uses the Toulmin method to construct her essay.

I believe the claim for this argument is as follows, “There’s a convincing link between gun availability and gun suicide, for one. And studies from the United States and abroad suggest that some gun laws do rein in gun violence. To make firm conclusions, though, scientists are desperate for more data.” (Rosen).

The author then goes on to support her viewpoint throughout the essay stating some of the difficulties that researchers have to overcome to get important data. “The Tiahrt amendment was the first in a series of provisions that drastically limited the agency’s ability to share its crime gun data — no giving it to researchers, no making it public, no handing it over under Freedom of Information Act requests (the public’s channel for tapping into information from the federal government).” (Rosen).

The warrant for this essay is simple and appeals to people who are looking for a streamlined process for obtaining information. “A handful of laws snarl the process, from how a gun trace begins to who can see the data.” (Rosen).

Rosen later goes on to discuss the opposing view point for more laws on gun control, and address some of the ineffectiveness of current laws. She will then rebut these viewpoints by suggesting less specific small laws, and suggest more drastic blanket laws.

For her qualifier, Rosen states, “Less uncertainty would require more analyses and more data. But in this field, even that doesn’t guarantee consensus.” (Rosen).

After examining the Turnitin.com report from my essay last week, I was able to see how the site breaks down the parts of a student’s paper. I now have a general idea of how it is evaluating the papers and where it searches for possible plagiarized material. Overall, the only things that is showed on my paper for similarities from other sources were quotes from the speech, my work cited, and parts of two sentences that were probably common statements about the address.

Zachary Ribble:

For this week’s form I decided to go with Stephen M. Walt’s essay “The Myth of American Exceptionalism.” I chose this essay because it was easier for me to read it critically and pick out the terms.

Found in the first section:

Claim:“By focusing on the supposedly exceptional qualities, Americans blind themselves to the ways that they are a lot like everyone else.” (Walt) This is found in the end of the third paragraph and shows the point Walt is going to argue. Also, at the end of the fifth paragraph Walt says, “…is a more realistic and critical assessment of America’s true character and contributions. In that spirit, I offer here the Top 5 Myths about American Exceptionalism.” So I am leaning toward the first quote sounding like a better claim, but figured I would add the second in case I missed the mark.

-Qualifier:“Ironically, U.S. foreign policy would probably be more effective if Americans were less convinced of their own unique virtues and less eager to proclaim them.” (Walt) Not sure on this one. But when he says, “probably,” I’m thinking he is more trying to add to his claim.

Under “Myth 2”:

-Warrant: “The United States may not have been as brutal as the worst states in world history…” (Walt)

-Backing:“…but a dispassionate look at the historical record belies most claims about America’s moral superiority.” (Walt)

-Support: “… the United States has been one of the most expansionist powers in modern history.” (Walt)

-Grounds:“… it eliminated most of the native papulations and confined the survivors to impoverished reservations.” (Walt)

Under “Myth 3”:

-Concession: “America’s scientific and technological achievements are fully deserving of praise and owe something to the openness and vitality of the American political order.” (Walt)

-Rebuttal: “But America’s past success is due as much to good luck as to any uniquely American virtues. The new nation was lucky that the continent was lavishly endowed with natural resources and traversed by navigable rivers. It was lucky to have been founded far from the other great powers and even luckier that the native population was less advanced and highly susceptible to European diseases.” (Walt)

I read “Age Boom”, It briefly talks about the social security and how it’s not working; also, it talks about the new boom of workers not wanting to retire and work as long as they are able.

Claim – “This once-existential threat to the U.S. economy now looks very much like a potential bonanza” (Rothkopf 66). I believe this is the claim in his article, because he starts with what the other side believes and follows with he believes the opposite.

Support – “According to a 2015 Federal Reserve study, 27 percent of Americans said they would “keep working as long as possible.” Another one in eight respondents said they don’t plan to ever retire.” (Rothkopf 67). This is one of a few of the statistics used to support his claim. He states in his claim that instead of social security being a bust, the old threat looks to be working out with a good portion of America working longer than expected.

Warrant – “The financial iceberg America seemed to be careening toward for the past 30 years, the unfunded retirement health care liability that many sound-minded politicians and economists warned would bankrupt us all” (Rothkopf 66). This is the statement that needs to be accepted by the reader. The reader needs to think that social security is failing, if the reader does not believe this, the article would be no interest and the point of Rothkopf would be unaccepted.

Backing – I don’t believe there is any clear backing in this article.

Rebuttal – Rothkopf talks about how when social security was sated, the burdens of work would stop people from working as an elder. But he states that times have changed and states facts of people living longer healthier lives that will cause them to work longer.

Qualifier – “And while many keep working for financial reasons” (Rothkopf 67). He states many instead of all, strengthening his argument to acknowledge there are outlying cases.

Part 1: Essay: The Myth of American Exceptionalism by Stephen M. Walt

In the chosen essay, Walt argues that the two-century-old idea of “American exceptionalism” is not accurate. He claims that the belief of the Americans who think that the American values, political structure, and the history are exceptional making their country unique are oblivious to the facts.

Claim: “By focusing on their supposedly exceptional qualities, Americans blind themselves to the ways that they are a lot like everyone else” (Walt, 72).

Support: The ground or support of Walt’s claim is, “The only thing wrong with this self-congratulatory portrait of America’s global role is that it is mostly a myth” (Walt, 72). He supports his view with the given statement that American exceptionalism is a myth and not a reality.

Warrant: He supports his claim rationally, “What we need, in short, is a more realistic and critical assessment of America’s true character and contributions” to which readers will agree.

Backing: Walt backs his warrant by giving evidence in the form of 5 myths using logos and ethos. He writes, “In that spirit, I offer here the Top 5 Myths about American Exceptionalism” (72). Walt’s supports his claim with the examples of 5 myths as backings.

For examples, I will discuss all the terms used in myth #1: There Is Something Exceptional about American Exceptionalism.

Walt’s explains that such lofty declarations are not unique because most of the great countries reel under this idea. He supports his claim with the examples of other great nations like Britain, France, and Portugal. Further, he makes the claim credible by giving Obama’s views that “Obama was right to remind us that all countries prize their own particular qualities” using logos and ethos.

Rebuttal: In the myth #1, Walt gives concession to the opposite view that when compared to powers like Russia, the Unites States has better record of virtue. However, later he rebuts the counterargument in these words, “Among great powers, thinking you’re special is the norm, not the exception” making his claim look sincere.

Qualifier: From the same part of the argument, I pick the qualifier ‘most’ used by Walt in the following statement: “Most great powers have considered themselves superior to their rivals and have believed that they were advancing some greater good when they imposed their preferences on others” (72). In the quotation, the author uses ‘most’ instead of the sweeping word ‘all’ to leave room for discussion.

Similarly, we can find Toulmin’s terms in the other five myths that Walt’s has argued in the essay.

Part 2: I went through the turnit-in score which is less than 20%. I have used quotations from the primary source, but the details trace it to the open web sources, which is rather confusing. We are required to use the quotations from the text, so I am not sure what I can do differently.
