3. Do you think that supporting constitutionally protected religious freedoms requires you to believe that all religious beliefs are equally valid?

I do not believe that supporting constitutionally protected religious freedoms requires you to believe that all religious beliefs are equally valid. Of course, this is just my opinion. When I lived in Iowa, I went to private schools, specifically Baptist and Lutheran schools. When I moved to Maryland, I noticed more Catholic churches and other denominations. I never thought that Christianity was the only valid religion, it is simply what one believes in. This is part of what makes people different is that we all can hold different values and thought processes and we shouldn’t be judged for how we think or feel. Personally, I have not come across a person who has been discriminatory towards other religions. Depending on where a person is from, they are exposed to certain religions. The only unfortunate part of religion, specifically, is that people can interpret the religion in different ways. If they have a personal bias towards a religion or person, they may believe that the only way to follow the beliefs of the religion are to harm other people who believe in that other religion or that person. Being in America means that we have freedoms; it doesn’t mean that we have to agree with everybody, but we have to respect their right to exercise their rights.

5. What do these three statements suggest to you about Americans’ attitudes toward religious diversity?

These three statements suggest that everybody believes differently. There are some who believe that their religion is the only religion that is valid and every other religion is inferior. There are some who are tolerant of other religions; they may believe that their religion is better than others, but it doesn’t mean that they don’t recognize that people have other beliefs. Then, you have some that believe that all religions are equal and that everybody should come together and embrace their differences. I would like to think that the first quote is the oldest quote out of all three, but that may or may not be true because there are some people out there that still believe in that way. Although people have freedom of speech, I think it is better if people don’t speak negatively toward a specific group because this alienates people. The other issue is that while one person might just be speaking, another person might take this too far and inflict serious harm against other people. Honestly, if we are facing a crisis like 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina, I highly doubt that people who believe in a particular religion are going to avoid helping because it might benefit somebody of a different religion than their own. These are perfect examples of people who come together, regardless of their differences, because there is a need and people truly need help.

Do you think it is possible for a person to believe his or her religion is true and still respect the truth of other religions?

I absolutely have faith it is possible for a person to truly believe in his/her religion as truth and still respect the truth in others religions. I however do not think that even though you may respect another’s beliefs that you will be able to understand it fully especially if you are 100% in your core that particular religion. For example, if I believe the Easter bunny is real, and my friend does not-in order to co-exist as equals because we care about each other- we will both try to understand one another’s reasoning behind our beliefs out of RESPECT for one another, but to believe in more than one religion for the sake of understanding a person’s vantage point seems oxymoronic.

If you have a pronounced religion it will be hard to believe the validity of other religions in my opinion. To me, that is like saying I believe the sky is blue, but you believe it is green and because I support your belief that it is green then I too believe the sky is green for you and blue for me. I do however think that supporting constitutionally protected religious freedoms are very important to the preservation of humankind and the various cultures that people come from. Just because I may claim a particular doesn’t take away from the validity of someone else’s. People have been granted the right to practice whatever religion they so choose. I also think that religions are tied very closely to cultures. For example, my mother was raised Buddhist in Thailand. Almost anything that happens in life, a true Buddhist will go visit the temple and pray on it i.e. “tam boon”. It is very important to be in good standing with the temple with good karma.
