Ethics in Practice: Whistleblower – An Ethical Dilemma
Morality is a strategic capital for any organization and a major pillar for the reputation of most organizations. Moral intelligence is the mental capacity of a person to determine how universal human principles should be applied to our persona values, goals and actions (Tarner, & Christen, 2013). One Jeffery Wegand practiced moral intelligence when he came out and exposed tobacco Company for putting more nicotine content than is required in tobacco. A whistle blower is someone that brings unethical, illegal or immoral business practices to the attention of the public. By exposing this act, Wegand save the lives of millions of people who would have been hooked to tobacco smoking and later on contracted cancer whose treatment is expensive. Despite knowing the consequences that were to follow if he went public with this information, he still felt that he had the moral obligation to speak out. He was able to overcome this ethical dilemma and did what was ethical right in this situation. Wegand grew up in a religious family and his father was very strict, a condition that made him develop strong adherence to rules and always want to do what is right (Brenner, 2004). As a result of helping public, Wigand lost his privacy, his family and his reputation amidst a series of law suits and countersuits. It takes a person with the highest moral intelligence to endure this for the sake of ensuring that we have a clean society. If one thought that this experience will break him but the opposite happened. Years late Wigand became more candid as an anti-tobacco activist and spends most of his time speaking to schools and the society in general on the dangers of abuse of tobacco.
