Instructions: In class we discussed how an effective audience analysis can improve a persuasive message, and we brainstormed different methods and types of questions to use if we were to conduct our own audience analysis. For this activity, you will examine the extent to which an opinion column from The Daily Athenaeum considers its audience – WVU students – in a persuasive message about becoming a resident assistant (RA). Refer to class notes from Unit 6 (Introduction to Rhetoric) about audience analysis to help you complete this activity.

Visit http://www.thedaonline.com/opinion/article_f46a2d0… to read the opinion column in The DA titled, “Saving money in college: How being an RA can save on cash” and respond to each of the following questions:

  1. Why does getting to know an audience through an audience analysis tend to increase the persuasiveness of a message?
  2. To what extent did the columnist take the audience into consideration? Identify at least three specific factors from the article that reflect the columnist’s knowledge of you and of other WVU students.
  3. Consider your answer to (2). Did incorporating these factors improve the persuasiveness of the article? Why or why not?
  4. Identify two additional questions that the columnist could have asked the audience (WVU students) to make her argument even more persuasive. Explain why each of these questions would be important to ask in relation to the topic of the column.

The First Sale Doctrine, Section 109(a) of the Copyright Act allows the owner of any copyrighted material to sell the material without the permission of the copyright owner. This is what allows you to buy a textbook from the CCBC bookstore and then re-sell the book either back to the Bookstore or to another individual without getting into trouble with the publisher of the textbook.

Well an enterprising young man and graduate student from Thailand used friends and family to buy copies of textbooks published outside of the US- at a significant discount from US prices (why is everything cheaper when produced outside of the US) and then he resold the books to US students at deeply discounted prices. He made about $100,000 on eBay doing this. He was sued by the publisher of eight of the textbooks he resold. The student enlisted the First Sale Rule as a defense under Copyright law.

The textbook publisher tried to argue that the First Sale Doctrine applied only to books published in the US – and the trial court and circuit court of appeals agreed with the publisher. The student then appealed to the US Supreme Court AND HE WON! The US Supreme Court agreed with him and held that it did not matter that the material was produced abroad. That the First Sale Rule favored a non-geographic interpretation. Attached is a copy of the majority opinion.

Week 11 Case – Discussion Board First Sale Doctrine(1).pdf

So what do you think -textbook manufacturers have to contend with tons of competition at home and now abroad. They have tight profit margins (so they claim)- should a person be able to buy cheaper textbooks abroad and resell them here? It is sort of like buying prescription drugs online from Canada – same principle. Should the Congress change the law to protect American textbook publishers?

A documented research paper (1000 words in length = approx. 3-4 pages double spaced, 12-point font).

  • The paper should support a thesis statement with information gained from research or investigation.
  • The paper will not be just a report presenting information, but will be a paper that carefully examines and presents your own historical interpretation of the topic you have chosen and your interpretation of the information you have gathered.
  • The paper may include consideration of problems and solutions, define key terms, or refute arguments against your thesis statement.

It will be important to choose a topic of interest to you.

  • Approach this assignment with an open and skeptical mind, then form an opinion based on what you have discovered.
  • You must suspend belief while you are investigating and let the discoveries shape your opinion. (This is a thesis-finding approach.)
  • Once you have found your thesis, write the paper to support it.

You will use some of the following critical thinking skills in this process:

  1. Choosing an appropriate topic, limiting the topic
  2. Gathering information, summarizing sources
  3. Analyzing and evaluating sources
  4. Defining key terms
  5. Synthesizing information, comparing and contrasting sources
  6. Testing a thesis, making a historical argument, using refutation
  7. Amassing support for a position
  8. Documenting sources

Because this may be a longer paper than you have written before and a complex process is involved, it is recommended that you complete this paper using the following steps:

  1. Choose a topic related to U.S. History up to 1877 (Chapters 1-15) that you would truly like to explore and that you are willing to spend some time on. Your chosen topic should be focused. Pose a question that you really want to answer. You may want to begin with more than one topic in mind.
  2. Do some preliminary reading on the topic(s). You may begin with the textbook, then further explore the information available. Refine your topic. Summarize your topic, your interest in the topic, the questions you want to answer, and a hypothesis you want to test.
  3. Gather information from a variety of sources. Use a minimum of four sources for your paper, and at least one must be a primary source.
    • Examples of primary sources are ones that are used in our discussion forums 2 – 8.
    • They are sources that are contemporary to the times under investigation.
    • An example of a secondary source is our textbook, though the textbook also contains excerpts of primary sources, which you may use as a source in your paper.
  4. Outline the results of your research and the plan for your paper (you are not required to submit the outline).
  5. Write the final draft and be sure to include a Works Cited List, and use the correct MLA documentation style.

Grade Rubric

Industrial/organizational (I/O) psychology can impact the workplace in a wide range of areas. When it comes to understanding human behavior, industrial/organizational (I/O) professionals can support organizations as they manage change, become more global, and even strategically plan for the future. Consider the value of understanding how people work and think as you answer the following questions:

  • What is utility theory, and how does it apply to industrial/organizational (I/O) applications, such as employee selection?
  • What is the systems approach? Thinking about your most recent/current job, did the organization use a systems approach in performance management? If so, what evidence of the systems approach did you observe? If a systems approach was not used, how could it have been applied?
  • Imagine that you are an industrial/organizational (I/O) professional taking a new job. The organization is going through reorganization, and strategic planning meetings are taking place. The meetings do not include anyone from human resources (HR) or an industrial/organizational (I/O) professional. What might you say to convince the chief executive officer (CEO) that you should be included in strategic planning?

Your response should directly address each question, providing references and examples to support your points. You should use at least two scholarly sources cited in APA format.

Relocation Decision

Your company is considering a decision of relocating to another country. You have been given the job of researching different alternatives for relocation. Your report will help the board decide where to relocate, and will help the employees know what to expect in a new country.

The company is considering Costa Rica, Saudi Arabia, and Germany. Your task is to review the legal system and policing style in these countries and produce a 3- to 4-page report in a Microsoft Word document addressing the following:

  • What is the dominant policing style of each country?
  • How do the police in each country deal with issues of human rights? Are there any protections in place for the citizens?
  • Do the countries face any terrorism issues? Would a US company be at risk?
  • Are there any activities that are legal in the United States but are illegal in the other countries?
  • If an employee (or the company) were to be prosecuted for a crime, what kind of trial system (adversarial or inquisitorial) would be in effect?

After reviewing the three countries, conclude your report by explaining:

  • Which country’s police and legal systems seem to most closely resemble the systems of the United States?
  • Which country would you recommend the company to choose? Why?

You may choose to address each of the above-mentioned points for all the three countries or review each country separately. The Central Intelligence Agency’s World Factbook is a good starting place for information on other countries.

Support your responses with examples.

Cite any sources in APA format.
