Six abandoned houses have burned in Pike County during 2012. Arson is suspected in all cases. You have VO video of all. This morning, the Pike County Sheriff’s office announced that it has arrested Wayne Rucks and charged him with at least two of the arsons. Rucks is 26 years old and is a member of the Goshen Volunteer Fire Dept. Investigators for the Sheriff’s office say an anonymous tip left on the Secret Witness line answering machine led to the arrest. Rucks is in custody and is being questioned about the other fires. Sheriff Buck Murdock says there may be additional arrests.

Members of a Troy Church are upset. The Everlasting Life Church has been meeting for the last three years in part of the old Wal-Mart on 231. Pastor Mike Hudsucker and his wife and co-pastor Joann have been leading a fund raising campaign for most of that time to build a new worship house on property donated by a church member on the Elba Highway. After Labor Day services, the Hudsuckers left on a revival tour of Florida in hopes of raising more funds. They were due back for Sunday Services on Oct. 7. They have not been seen. Bart Murphy, a member of the church board, says more than $100,000 is missing from the building account at Troy Bank and Trust. Church members have asked the district attorney to look into this matter. Reporter Shaliba Hitler has a 1:40 package on this event.

Vernon Wormer, EdD., as been assistant dean of students at Troy since 2004. The Georgia board of Regents announced today that Wormer has been selected from among 12 applicants to take over leadership of that state’s junior college system. Wormer will continue at Troy until the Christmas break, and will start his new job in Georgia on January 4. You have VO video of Wormer

Students from Pike County Middle School had a field trip to the Pike Pioneer Museum today. There, they learned from museum volunteers how early settlers in Alabama lived. Volunteers demonstrated how they cooked, hunted, and made soap. Reporter Vonda Sixkiller has a 1:40 news package

A delivery truck operated by King Beverage Co. of Brundidge overturned this morning at the intersection of U.S. 231 and South Brundidge Street. This is the busiest intersection in Troy. Over 500 cases of Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra and Bud Light Lime tumbled out and were sprayed across 3 lanes of the intersection. Traffic was obstructed for more than an hour. Most of the bottles were shattered, but cans largely survived the accident. To add to the confusion and disruption of traffic, many cars were stopped in the intersection and nearby, as their drivers and passengers got out and grabbed what they considered to be ‘free beer.’ Two stopped cars were hit during this before police arrived in sufficient numbers to restore order. Reporter Derek Jones has a 1:25 package.

Police and paramedics were called to the Colley Senior Complex today when two women in their 80s got into an altercation over an 82 year old man during the regular weekly bingo tournament. No one was arrested, but both of the women were treated at the scene for contusions. The women were both transported to Troy Mercy Hospital for further treatment and observation. The assistant director of the Complex said in a :22 sound bite that she had “never seen anything like it.” (outcue) You also have VO of the exterior of the complex.

Police were called to a home in southwest Troy at 3:30 this afternoon. Entering the open front door, they found a couple dead from apparent gunshot wounds. Police have not yet revealed the names of the man and woman whose bodies were found. Police are also not saying who called or what prompted the call, nor have they confirmed if the bodies are those of the couple known to live at that address. You have VO video of the scene.

Power was out for about two hours this morning in downtown Troy. A pickup truck crashed into the electric substation on Victory Street and damaged equipment there. The accident happened about 7:15 this morning. Police say the driver, a 62-year old farmer, apparently fell asleep, missed a turn, and crashed through the fence at the substation. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A Birmingham man has been sentenced to serve life in prison after he was convicted in the 2012 killings of five men found dead in a home. A judge sentenced 20-year-old Rashad Stoves yesterday to serve six life sentences. He was charged with one count of capital murder for each man killed and a sixth count for a multiple slaying.

FYFFE, Ala. (AP) — Forecasters have confirmed a second tornado spawned by storms that hit north Alabama last week. The National Weather Service office in Huntsville conducted a field survey this week and determined a weak EF-0 tornado touched down briefly on April 3 near Fyffe in DeKalb County.

DANVILLE, Ala. (AP) — State troopers in Alabama say an 18-wheeler truck hauling a load of chickens overturned near Danville. Troopers say the wreck happened just after 4 o’clock this morning.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Jurors are in their second day of deliberations in the trial of an Alabama police officer accused of using excessive force against a grandfather from India. The panel returned to federal court in Huntsville to consider a civil rights charge against Madison Police officer Eric Parker. The judge earlier agreed to the jury’s request to see a police video of Parker’s encounter with 58-year-old Sureshbhai Patel (suh-REHSH’-by pah-TEL’).

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Former Congressman Artur Davis has asked a judge to require the Alabama Democratic Party to accept his paperwork to run for Montgomery County Commission. Davis last week filed a motion seeking a temporary restraining order.

HEADLAND, Ala. (AP) — Storms dropped more than 5 inches of rain in parts of Alabama and damaged a school in Headland, prompting officials to cancel classes. Henry County Superintendent Lesa Knowles says high winds passed through the area early Sunday, peeling the roof from the Headland High School Auditorium.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Gov. John Kasich is making a campaign stop in Alabama.
