Diagnosing information systems failure

InproIT Technologies is an organization that provides Internet services to its clients. This year the organization has decided to implement a new online bill payer service. This feature would allow its customers to automate bill payments for credit card, wireless, and any other accounts where a payment for a purchase or service is due. The customers would create a username and password, and then set up their banking information so that payments can be automatically debited from their accounts. The system will also have the ability to send text messages to a cellular phone or e-mail informing the customer that a payment has been processed or a new payment is due for a revolving account.

However, during the implementation process, the organization found it difficult to gather support for this project from company stakeholders. Many did not want to implement the system at this time suggesting that the company did not have enough skilled staff to support the project or the system itself. The information technology staff was unable to work out some of the bugs. They could not properly link customer accounts to their appropriate banks and this caused a delay in posting payments to the recipients. In addition, the organization encountered problems when many individuals were logged into the system at the same time, frequently causing the system to bottle-neck and become inaccessible. With no money or support to address these issues, InproIT Technologies found that this project was not going to be a successful venture and decided to stop the project.

Provide your analysis on what could have caused the online bill payer service system to fail. What approaches would you have taken to implement the project? Identify and discuss methods and approaches that could be used to make the project successful. Research a real-world MIS project implementation, summarize its purpose, discuss the degree to which it was successful, and compare and contrast it to the online bill payer service system project. Support your analysis with appropriate rationale, examples, and references.
