Charts and graphs are used quite often in newspaper articles, magazines, books, and various online articles. There are pros and cons to using these types of visual representations. Describe one pro and one con for using a graph or chart. Share an example of a time when this type of visual changed your mind about something or gave you a deeper understanding of a topic or current event.

Hello Everyone…

One advantage to using charts and graphs is that they can help the audience to visualize a message that’s being conveyed. There are and can be useful when there is a lot of information to go by, whether it is a word problem or statistics.

One disadvantage would be that there are different types that makes it more confusing on which one to choose from depending on the wording of the material or the information that is provided.

A time when a visual such as a chart or graph changed my mind is when I began to explore ALEKS and work on the topics provided. Some of the material have been very easy to understand but some of them have been very challenging according to charts that are provided on the probability topic. Overall, I am doing well, and I make sure that I follow the explanation example first and take notes.

Charts and graphs are used to highlight relevant statistics with a visual display. We use these powerful data photos everyday. Why? I think they are used to grab folks attention to the details. Charts and graphs are often in color and the general consensus of the data can be gleaned in a few seconds rather than minutes it may take to get the data if it were presented in paragraph forms. This is the best way to present relative data because it’s easier to compare statistics against one another when one can clearly see the difference via line graph, bar graphs, pie charts, etc.

I found the example in the professor’ s video which showing expenditures of American households in the past versus today. It was easy to see that Americans love our food and we consume more than we save. I also noticed the increased share of healthcare expense. This is no surprise, but I honestly expected healthcare to account for an even greater share. If this same graph were done based on sole the senior population, this would certainly be the case. The cost of life sustaining drugs are absurd today.

Recently, I saw a graph depicting the increases in tuition costs around the country. This made me not think about my own education but that of my daughter. She will be going to college in just six years. This prompted me to get serious about her education fund and contribute more to her college savings plan. I do not want her burdened with student loan debt. I only wish I could have started saving sooner.
