The Self-Analysis Essay assignment serves as your first tentative foray into content beyond your own experiences. Where our first essay’s purpose is mostly to inform or explain, this essay’s purpose is to illustrate.
To illustrate means to show or demonstrate something clearly. An effective illustration essay, sometimes known as an example essay, clearly demonstrates and supports a point through the use of evidence.
The controlling idea of an essay is called a thesis. A writer can use different types of evidence to support his or her thesis. Ultimately, you want the evidence you choose to help your reader “see” your point, as one would see a good illustration in a magazine or on a website. The stronger your evidence is, the more clearly the reader will consider your point.
Using evidence effectively can be challenging, though. The evidence you choose will usually depend on your subject and who your readers/audience are. When writing an illustration essay, keep the following in mind:
i. Use evidence that is appropriate to your topic as well as appropriate for your audience.
ii. Assess how much evidence you need to adequately explain your point depending on the complexity of the subject and the knowledge of your audience regarding that subject.
Keeping in mind your subject in relation to your audience will increase your chances of effectively illustrating your point.
So, what is your specific assignment?
Imagine that Iowa Western is offering a residential summer internship academy to students who are interested in spending four weeks working and studying with professionals in fields related to your programs of study.
This program includes living in campus housing and working side-by-side with professionals in their actual workplaces. As part of the application process, you are required to identify what field you are interested in studying and what you hope to learn while you are attending the academy.
Write a persuasive essay in which you clearly illustrate WHY you should be selected for this opportunity. Clearly state the field that interests you, why you have selected this field to study, and what you hope to gain by participating in the program.
