Here is the classmates response:

Student 1: One of the most common fallacies I’ve noticed since writing Paper 1 would have to be the straw man fallacy. I think it’s so easy for people to belittle other’s opinions in order to make their own opinion seem like the correct side of the issue. Another fallacy I’ve noticed more often since writing Paper 1 would be the appealing to authority fallacy. It’s easy for us as a society to believe the things that we hear that we think authority figures reccomend to us. For example, in my paper I discussed how an example of this fallacy would be how in toothpaste commercials they often include a statement saying “4 out of 5 dentists recommend” or something similar. It’s very easy for us to hear that and think that that means that we should trust the product the company wants us to purchase.

Student 2: A fallacy that pops into my head whenever I think of it being used in the media is the slippery slope fallacy. It may not be the one that is used the most often but when thinking about commercials today its one that is used a lot. The cable commercials I feel come up with a new commercial every month and it is almost the same thing. The fallacy of the slippery slope. Another thing that I find slippery slope in is songs being played. Many songs start the beginning and the event that happened in the beginning made the end of the song happen. I also saw a couple cookie commercials that used that same type of fallacy. Before having this paper I never really saw fallacies in anything but now I see them everywhere.

Student 3: After studying fallacies, it is quite easy to say that fallacies are everywhere around us. They can be clearly and easily identified in the media, newspapers and even in our daily lives.. The most commonly seen fallacy in my opinion is hasty generalizations. This fallacy can be seen in advertisements as well as in our every day experiences. People make quick decisions based on a small sample. Advertisements relating to personal hygene are mostly based on hasty generalizations, let’s say toothpastes, soaps etc. Moreover, we take no time in reaching a conclusion based on our own small sample e.g the so and so store does not have good quality products because Sarah and Ken’s experience of shopping there was not good. In this example two people’s shopping experience was not at a store so they took a decision that nothing is good at that store.
