Q1.Outline the purpose of the Mental State Examination. Include in your explanation the range of general clinical settings where the MSE could be used to support you in your work as a Registered Nurse. A mental state examination is a comprehensive assessment tool used by health professionals which focuses on a person’s mental health state at the time of presentation. This assessment is the core component and foundation for further comprehensive mental health assessments. The purpose of the MSE is to gather information about a patient systematically. (Hungerford, Hodgson, Clancy, Monisse-Redman, Bostwick & Jones, 2015) This assessment tool is utilised within various settings such as private and public hospitals, general practice’s, and community, education and rehabilitations services. The information collated for the MSE is “cognitive, emotional, behavioural information which can be both subjective and objective” (Womble, 2015, p. 89). To gain valid data during this assessment as a Registered Nurse a therapeutic relationship needs to be established. This can be done through preparation, non-verbal cues, verbal cues and listening with empathy.
