The story Through the Eyes of My Mullato Daughter by Michele, L. Waters is an enchanting and highly complex story of an interracial family that was faced by hardships that came with living in the southern parts of America which is mainly a white countryside. The story focuses on the struggles and life of Britany, the daughter of Richard and Marylyn. Richard, being a white man, fell in love with Marylyn, a woman of color. This choice of a couple was not liked at all in the south. According to the story, it is important to understand that back then, white supremacy was strong while racism was common. Verbal and physical abuse over people of color was a common thing during that era. The book introduces many events and characters who are significant in the life of Britany and her struggles with the patrons of Ebony’s Eyes home.

The passage at the beginning of the story shows the moment when Britany showed up home only to find out that her father had been murdered. The only person who was at home at that time was her mother and the lately deceased father. I believe that racism plays a sharp role in this part of the novel. First, with a murder on the case, her mother, being of color, would take the blame more automatically since people of color were presumed not equal to white people. She had been receiving hostility from the white people even when her husband was alive. Now that he was dead, she would receive even more hostility. This leaves the reader wondering how such a woman would be able to take more from her society. Richard was not the best husband all along. In fact, he had become a very abusive husband to Marylyn, his wife. On many occasions, Marylyn was harassed and beaten by Richard (Waters, 2010).

The author, in my opinion, gives enough reasons explaining the source of all problems for this specific family. Richard loved Marylyn at a time when the people of color were not allowed to associate with white people. Richard is very sacrificial in nature. He is very tolerant of the problems he is facing because of the love he has for Marylyn. Later, he realizes that he has been through a lot with Marylyn and he starts on a path of hate and despises. He starts being abusive to the woman who he promised to love until death. I think that the negativity arising between the couple is not as a result of their own arguments but also external social factors and forces. All the external forces regarding racism are the root causes of the troubling relationship between Richard and Marylyn. Also, I do believe that Richard’s parents also had a role to play in creating problems for the couple. Psychologically, Richard is hurt by the fact that he is with Marylyn while disowned by his family and has to go to a different town in order to have a life (Waters, 2010).

This particular story, I believe, goes back in time to be able to explain the tough situation her father had put her mother throughout the years they had been married. It is seen that despite of his ill behaviors, Richard also went through a great deal of abuse from his neighbors and family for marrying a woman of color. Richard, according to the story, had grown up in an era where people of color were not viewed as equals to the white person. Richard’s father was racist in every aspect. In his mind, he knew that white and black people should never have any relations. Richard was never affected by his father’s ideas. He married Marylyn and experienced a great deal of suffering because he Marylyn was a woman of color. Richard went through different ordeals which never compared to the loss of his mother. At the funeral, he decided to bring his wife Marylyn and their daughter Britany. Hia father decided to humiliate him and his family before the crown by blaming him of his mother’s death. The entire family later decided to disown him. His sister Libby was the only one who didn’t do it because she loved Marylyn and Britany unconditionally.

In my opinion, the story about the missing twins depicts a kind of twist in the story. Britany finds out about her twin brothers that were given away at birth because, at the time, it was difficult enough to raise one child. When Britany was three years old, Marylyn was pregnant with their second child. Richard was not happy with the idea. He suggested that they give the child up for adoption in order to hide the children away from the people living in the neighborhood. Richard then went ahead to blackmail Marylyn that he would leave her and take Britany if she did not comply with his demands. Marylyn had no choice but to comply since her husband was a high-ranking officer at the Sheriff’s department who had the power to make a decision for his wife and no one would be able to question it. When in delivery, Marylyn did not know Richard’s intentions (Waters, 2010).

Jerome was one of the twins that were given up right after birth by their father Richard without the consent of the mother, Marylyn. He was sent to homes and ended up being abused by each and every home he went to. He then studied hard and earned a scholarship that allowed him to study law. He eventually completed his studies and turned out to be an accredited lawyer. He worked on minority and low paying cases because those were the only cases he would be handed in the law firm he used to work. His life as a lawyer was a tough one especially considering the fact that he was a black man in the era of post-racial America (Waters, 2010).

In my opinion, the story comes with high and low moments when it comes to emotions. It may easily leave a reader full of mixed emotions. Feelings of despise for the racial regime and its effects on millions of people, hate for Richard, pity for Marylyn and Britany, and feeling the loss of hope for Jerome and Jayden. Personally, I don’t think that the amount of heartache that Richard went through was accurately described in the story. I believe that Richard went through greater emotional pain than documented in the story. In turn, what came out was the unappreciation from Britany, their daughter, of all the problems that her father had to go through because of her mother. Her father suffered a lot: he was disowned by his family and scolded by members of the community and at work.

Britany had a divided attention when it came to matters of Ebony Eyes home. This is a fact that is shared in the story. She was good to the girls despite the fact that she kept jumping from one task to another. However, she cared a lot about the girls only that her personal life always came first. She would focus on the girls then jump back to finding her brothers while also handling her mother’s issues. The busy mature which was how she lived her life, was based on the idea that she could do anything and about just everything. This kind of behavior was typically painful to the girls at Ebony’s Eyes. Many issues were handled such as the fight between two girls over a man and the later story of the strange man who talked to one of the girls, who turned out to be Jayden, the other twin brother.

He, like many people living today, was forced to have different perspectives and opinions towards being with a different person from a very different background, Marylyn. Marylyn was a strong person to have gone through what she did and still keep moving forward. The injustices done to the characters in the story were not right in whichever extent or perspective. Martin Luther King Jr once said that an injustice anywhere is an injustice everywhere. It is important to remember this in our everyday living.
