Prompt 1: You are a middle-school teacher and your principal has asked you and fellow teachers to conduct a study on the value of teaching computer programming. Your team developed the following hypothesis: Students’ learning of computer programming in the middle grades increases their development of logical thinking skills. Explain how you would choose the type of data collection instruments for your study.

Madi’s Response

Psychology would be the best way to study the hypothesis; “psychology is the science of behavior and mental processes.” (Myers & DeWall, 2014) Choosing information from psychologic research that has a relationship between learning and age, learning and culture, and learning and skills or self-efficacy. It is also possible to research on the outcomes that schools have when they implement technology or learn a different language. Computing programming is like learning another language and then test the technology that is developed, but also programming has a close relationship with Math, which is used to implement logarithms. Knowing this and assuming that I am a teacher I can identify the skills of my students and start developing a little study by mixing a group of students at different levels of math and grades mostly at random. This study will help to support or contradict the hypothesis, in this case I would be reviewing and interpreting quantitative data. A quantitative study also can be done by selecting students with specific skills and then compare both results.
