Workstation task times can increase or decrease overall manufacturing cycle time, thus constraining production volume. There are numerous ways of reducing task times, thus increasing production capacity. One method of reducing task times is to alter the facility layout by splitting tasks. By splitting tasks, cycle time can be reduced and, as a result, throughput can be increased.
Consider the data excerpt (attached). As you can see, if the maximum cycle time per part necessary to meet production volume is 40 seconds, then clearly work cells 1 and 4 exceed the time required. It is not possible to meet production requirements based upon task times. Explain what methods you would use to reduce workcenter task times. Also, explain why these methods would be beneficial in this situation.
