A Whistleblower-is a person who exposes any kind of information or activity that is deemed illegal, unethical or not correct within an organization that is either private or public, several laws exist to protect whistleblowers. To me a whistleblower is very important within todays society. Some people may look at it as being a snitch or being a busy body or perhaps a tattle- tale type person. However, after reading more about being a whistleblower you are doing exactly that blowing the whistle and sounding the alarm to let others know that something is not right about the situation that you are concern about. The first things that pops in my mind is the African American culture and one particular rule that may be said within the families, “what happens in my house stays in my house or perhaps, another saying is “ you better not tell anyone our business”. Attitudes towards whistleblowing have evolved considerably during the past 50 years in corporate America ( Ravishanskar L 2003 February 4).

One situation that comes to mind, while working at DSS, a daughter was being rape and molest by her father for many years, from the age of 5 to 12 years old. However, she was sworn to keep it a secret and not to tell anyone what was going on within their household. However, she blew the whistle on her father, it was later confirmed that others within the household knew what was going on but refuse to get help for the young girl. The father was the only one that was working at the time and the entire family depended on him to supply their everyday needs. In my opinion the young girl did the right thing even though it meant that her father went to prison and perhaps she suffered much anxiety and worry pertaining to her family and the decision that she made.

Pertaining to our discussion reading; I perceive that Dr. Wigand showed moral intelligence with exposing the tobacco company for their immoral practices. However, it still has not stop the sales of the tobacco industry people are still purchasing and using cigarettes on a regular basis. I have seen woman that are pregnant and smoking cigarettes. I have seen elderly individuals in the nursing home that are sick smoking cigarettes. I have learned that nicotine is the most addictive drug on the market. Yes, I would have done the exact same thing, that Wigand did, it’s a matter of life and death. Most of us have family members that are addictive to nicotine and for him to remain quiet would have been like putting a gun in his family members hand and telling them to use it to kill themselves. Therefore, at the end of the day everyone is responsible for their own actions. However, Wigand sounding that alarm on the tobacco industry perhaps was able to save many lives.
