Cathy Davidson, “Project Classroom Makeover”

Oliver Sacks, “The Mind’s Eye”

Malcolm Gladwell, “The Power of Context”

Like other writers whose work we have read this semester, Malcolm Gladwell presents readers with an idea that seems counterintuitive: he argues that “the convictions of your heart and the actual contents of your thoughts are less important, in the end, in guiding your actions than the immediate context of your behavior” (161). Knowing full well how readers might react to such an idea, Gladwell notes that what he calls a “fact” appears to “violate some of our most deeply held assumptions about human nature” (161). For our fifth paper, apply Gladwell’s ideas to “The Mind’s Eye” and Cathy Davidson, “Project Classroom Makeover” we have read to answer this question: How might two other readings we have encountered complicate, contradict, or confirm the “power of context?”

Here are some questions to get you thinking. You do not need to answer them in the body of your essay, but brainstorming responses to them–and consulting the text while doing so–should lead to a more sophisticated final product:

1. Gladwell calls the Goetz case “a symbol of a particular, dark moment in New York City history” (150). What did the case symbolize in 1984? What does it symbolize to Gladwell?

2. Gladwell states that “an epidemic can be reversed, can be tipped, by tinkering with the smallest details of the immediate environment” (155). What does he mean by “tinkering” here and where do we see such “tinkering” in other readings?

3. What do the people Gladwell examines, such as Berard Goetz, William Bratton, and Philip Zimbardo, have in common? What do they want and how does what Gladwell calls the “Power of Context” affect their pursuits? How are they like or unlike figures from other essays we have read?

4. When discussing Zimbardo’s conclusions, Gladwell notes, “Zimbardo isn’t talking about environment” (158). What are the differences between “context” and “environment?” How do other writers examine this difference?

getting a grip from prohibition to harm reduction

AcademicWritersDen.com boasts a team of highly skilled and experienced writers who specialize in various academic fields. The company carefully selects its writers through a rigorous screening process to ensure that they possess the necessary qualifications and expertise. Whether it’s an essay, research paper, or any other homework assignment, students can rely on AcademicWritersDen.com to connect them with professionals who have an in-depth understanding of the subject matter. “Getting a Grip: From Prohibition to Harm Reduction”

Two of the most important policy strategies for dealing with alcohol problems and their damaging consequences are prohibition and harm reduction. The materials assigned for this week’s readings and posted in Unit 8 of the Online Review provide numerous examples of these alternative strategies. Based on those materials and other sources, I want you to compare and contrast these two approaches to “getting a grip” on alcohol-related problems in U.S. society.

Generally, prohibitionist policies aim to control alcohol-related problems by banning the use of alcohol. These strategies are sometimes known as “zero-tolerance” or “abstinence only” policies. The majority of alcohol treatment programs in the U.S. fall in this category, including AA and programs based on a disease model. The most notorious example of this approach is the Prohibition era, when alcohol was constitutionally banned from the U.S. from 1920-1933. The Lectures page for Unit 8 in the Online Review provides you with material on this “Great Experiment” and its implications for the more recent prohibitionist “War on Drugs.” Less extreme examples of policies that restrict access to alcohol are discussed in the reading by Gruenewald (2011).https://learn.umuc.edu/content/enforced/264091-000…

On the other hand, harm reduction policies attempt to limit or minimize the hazardous consequences of alcohol (or drug) use without necessarily limiting or banning use itself (see Marlatt and Witkiewitz 2010). For instance, instead of having “zero tolerance” for drinking or drug use, harm reduction strategies might include the goals of “safer use” or “managed use.” Examples range from needle-exchange programs to reduce the risks of HIV infection among drug users to the sale of beer on college campuses to reduce risks of drunk driving (or walking) to-and-from off-campus bars. The Resources page for Unit 8 focuses on another example of harm reduction: the “wet house” for homeless, alcohol-dependent men. https://learn.umuc.edu/content/enforced/264091-000…

Study Resources;

https://learn.umuc.edu/content/enforced/264091-000…

https://learn.umuc.edu/content/enforced/264091-000…

Your comparison of prohibition and harm reduction strategies should: (1) begin with a clear discussion of their respective characteristics and differences; (2) present one or two examples of how they would deal differently with particular alcohol problems; and (3) conclude with your evaluation of the relative strengths or limitations of each approach. You can use material from Week 7 readings, the Online Review, or other legitimate sources from publications or the internet, but be sure to cite, quote, and reference your sources properly. I have a “zero-tolerance” policy regarding plagiarism!

Provide a commentary (in two to two-and- a-half pages 12-size Times New Roman) trying to illuminate the meaning of this very ancient composition—a “sacred text of the Middle East.” Ensure to write a coherent composition, and refrain if possible from just simply summarizing the text.

“A cup of milk was offered to me,

and I drank it in the sweetness of the Lord’s kindness.

The Son is the cup, and the Father is He who was milked;

and the Holy Spirit is She who milked Him;

Because His breasts were full, and it was undesirable

that His milk should be ineffectually released.

The Holy Spirit opened Her bosom,

and mixed the milk of the two breasts of the Father.

Then She gave the mixture to the generation without their knowing,

and those who have received it are in the perfection of the right hand.

The womb of the Virgin took it, and she received conception and gave birth.

So the Virgin became a mother with great mercies.

And she labored and bore the Son but without pain,

because it did not occur without purpose.

And she did not require a midwife, because He caused her to give life.

She brought forth like a strong man with desire,

and she bore according to the manifestation,

and she acquired according to the Great Power.

And she loved with redemption,

and guarded with kindness, and declared with grandeur.

Hallelujah.”

(This question has parts)

In Singapore, early childhood teachers have noticed the significance of culture in shaping how children play. Mr & Mrs Pereira are parents to their only child, 5-year old son Bosco. Bosco attends 3-hour kindergarten programme. Recently they approached the school principal as they were concerned about Bosco’s learning in school. Below are the key points from the meeting:

“The only thing Bosco does independently is watch TV or play video games every day after school. it just worries us that multi-media is the only thing he wants to do at home. Both of us are working and he is usually home with the domestic helper after school. When we return home, he would be asking us to play with him which we dread! Why can’t he play on his own? We are so tired. We do not allow playing outdoors with the helper, just not safe! Wanted to check with you the principal… his teacher tells us he is learning through play in class.Can you tell us what Bosco learning through playing in school is?”

Qn 1 (a) Examine THREE(3) cultural factors that could limit the way Bosco learns through play. Provide at least 3 references. (30 marks)

1 (b) Describe how the principal can clearly explain the importance of play in the centre’s curriculum to Bosco’s parents and show how TWO (2) genres of play in which children learn, can be incorporated in a play-based curriculum. (20 marks)
