Concordia University African American and Ethnic American Poetries Paper

This forum covers the following texts:

Suggested topics for reading and writing are provided. Choose between these subjects:

For Soul Choj Vang, “The Last Drops”

Who are the “old men” featured in the text, and what is their significance?

What is the symbolism of “The Last Drops”?

Discuss one or more allusions in the poem (to the “Old World” culture and/or the “New World” American setting).

A common theme of immigrant literature is loss of culture and/or heritage; how may this poem be seen to portray that idea?

For Langston Hughes, “The Negro Speaks of Rivers”

Explain one or more of the allusions to Negro (world) history and culture—including but not limited to the various rivers—featured in the poem; you might also consider how these allusions combine to make a larger statement about the Negro race/peoples in the poem.

The poem is rich in imagery: analyze one or more of your favorite images.

Consider the poem in light of the Harlem Renaissance movement—of which Hughes was one of the leading artists—particularly the portrayal and experience of race and “Negro” identity. For example, how does Hughes feel about his identity or place as an African-American? How does he discuss race (literally and figuratively) in the text? How may his texts and ideas be seen as a reflection of the Harlem Renaissance and its elevation of black culture, especially as he was a key founder of the movement?

In your post, identify your featured text(s) by title (or a shortened version thereof) in the subject line: e.g. “Pocahontas to Her English Husband….” Please be sure to provide concrete textual evidence (line numbers for in-text poetry citations in MLA style).

Some poetic elements to consider: the speaker of the poem; the action of the poem; setting; form/structure (most of these modern poems are free verse or open-form poetry); repetition and parallelism; tone and/or diction (style); rhyme; rhythm/meter; sound and rhythm devices like alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeia, etc.; syntax/word order and punctuation; imagery; and types of figurative language: imagery, allusion, metaphor/simile, symbolism, personification, irony, hyperbole, synecdoche, and so on.
