There is a wealth of human resource information system (HRIS) packages available to assist organizations with their succession planning processes. However, not every package is suitable for every organization. It is important to be able to critically analyze available HRIS packages to determine their applicability for unique succession planning goals and needs. In this Discussion, you explore various options for HRIS packages, and you evaluate which options have the greatest ability to fulfill specific organizational needs.

To become more familiar with the ways in which technology solutions can accomplish this, review Chapter 14, “Using Technology to Support Succession Planning and Management Programs,” of the course text Effective Succession Planning. Specifically, use the list of leading HRIS vendors found on page 311 to begin your online exploration of available HRIS packages. To complete this Discussion, also examine the case study presented in Chapter 4, “CIGNA: Case Study,” of the course text Linkage Inc.’s Best Practices for Succession Planning: Case Studies, Research, Models, Tools to evaluate an HRIS package’s ability to fulfill organizational needs.

Post by Day 3 a cohesive and scholarly response based on your readings and research this week that addresses the following:

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of HRIS packages.
    • Explain the basic functions that most HRIS packages have to offer an organization and why using an HRIS package might be superior to other approaches historically used to address a company’s needs.
    • As a current or future HR leader, what is most important to consider when selecting HRIS packages?
      • Would your consideration change depending on the size of your organization and/or the products that your organization provides?
    • How would you evaluate an HRIS package’s effectiveness after implementation?
      • Which would you use: anecdotal evaluation, periodic evaluation, programmatic evaluation, or a mixture of the three?
        • Support your response by describing how this method would ensure that the HRIS package is addressing an organization’s needs.
