You will explain to a non-technical audience how something works and what it looks like.

You will choose an object or a process with which you are familiar. You will describe this object or process to an audience that has little or no background of the subject.

Keep in mind that you are not writing instructions on how to do something. You wrote instructions for writing assignment #1. For writing assignment #2, you will describe an activity that takes place. You will describe how a phenomenon happens or how a mechanism works. For example, you could describe how the heart pumps blood in the human body. But you would not give instructions on how to take someone’s blood. Other examples could describe how a bill becomes a law, how an insect changes through complete metamorphosis, or how a cotton gin works.

Your description must include graphics. The description will use visual detail in both words and images.

Examples include the following:

You would describe the process to an audience of a non-science background. ï‚·You are an auto mechanic. You could write a description of how spark plugs work in a four-cylinder engine to an audience of non-mechanics. Your description would describe what a spark plug looks like (spatial dimensions, shape, color, etc.) and how spark plugs work.

ï‚·You work in technical support at a computer store. You could write a description of how a graphics card works to an audience that is not familiar with computers. Your description would describe what a graphic card looks like (spatial dimensions, shape, color, etc.) and how graphics cards work.

ï‚·You work in a restaurant. You could write a description of how the serving process works during a busy Friday night. You would write a description to new workers at the restaurant. You would describe how the wait staff, cooks, managers, and other staff work together in serving food (i.e., who does what, in what order, and how to do it). Your description would descibe the process and include a flowchart to show the process and pictures of people involved in each stage of the process.

Length: 500-800 words total.
