Reading:

1) David Garrow, Chapter 14, “The Origins of the Montgomery Bus Boycott”

  1. Describe the tradition of African American activism in Montgomery prior to the bus boycott.
  2. Rosa Parks was not the first black woman to refuse to give up her seat to a white person on a Montgomery bus. Why did a community-wide bus boycott emerge only after Park’s refusal and arrest and not these earlier women?
  3. What role did Jo Ann Gibson Robinson play in organizing and coordinating the bus boycott?
  4. Eventually Martin Luther King, Jr. emerged as an important figure in the boycott. King recalled that the protesters were “not out to change the segregation laws,” and that they had made only modest demands of the Montgomery City Lines. How did the bus and city officials reply to these modest demands? What did King realize or learn from their intransigence?
