United States involvement in foreign affairs in the early 19th century Opinion Essay help

For this assignment, you will develop your opinion on a topic introduced in your most recent lecture by answering a set of questions.

Shortly after the American colonies won independence, France and Britain went to war. America sided with France and fought against the British until the warring countries finally signed a peace treaty in 1814. American politicians later argued that this war demonstrated that the US should avoid future “entangling alliances” that would obligate it to fight in defense of other countries’ interests.

What do you think: Was the US’s involvement in foreign affairs necessary in the early 19th century? Could the US have chosen to remain neutral? What advantages or disadvantages did an alliance with France present?

What about in modern times? Take an example of recent events (Gulf War, Syria or Libyan Conflict, Afganistan war) and discuss should the US remain neutral when it comes to conflicts outside its national borders, or are alliances with other countries and involvement in overseas relationships necessary? If the US should remain neutral in foreign affairs, why? If the US should make alliances, why are these alliances necessary or unnecessary? Please provide at least two examples to support your point of view.

There is no right answer in this assignment – the idea is simply to develop your own views on the subject of US involvement in foreign affairs. To receive full credit for this assignment, however, you must support each of your claims with illustrative examples. For instance, whether you say that the US should or should not involve itself in foreign affairs, you could use the 1983 Invasion of Grenada as an example.
